Scrimmage report
PROVO — Today’s scrimmage featured extended work for those battling for spots on the two-deep roster. The assumed starting defense didn’t scrimmage save for Spencer Hadley, who saw reps at Sam linebacker.
Most of the assumed starters on offense played, however, and did well — scoring three touchdowns and a field goal during a very hot afternoon at LaVell Edwards stadium.
First Set
Riley Nelson received the first set of reps and moved the offense 75 yards for a touchdown. Nelson went 5-6 for 59 yards which included a 14-yard touchdown pass to JD Falslev. Highlights of the set included a 15-yard reception by Jordan Smith during a third-and-long situation, and sacks recorded by Zac Stout and Remington Peck.
Second set
The offense sputtered a bit on the second set with James Lark going 2-3 for 15 yards on completions to Kurt Henderson and Adam Hine.
Third set
Riley Nelson went 1-2 for 16 yards during the third set. His lone pass was completed to tight end Austin Holt. Kevan Bills ended the set with a sack.
Fourth set
Jason Munns saw his first work of the day and responded well. He went 3-4 for 28 yards. The play of the set was made by receiver Brett Thompson, who laid out for a 10-yard catch during a third-and-long situation. Richard Wilson dropped a would-be touchdown in the endzone which led to Riley Stephenson making good on a 32-yard field goal. Jamaal Williams received cheers when he broke off a 15-yard run around the edge of the defense.
Fifth set
Riley Nelson guided the offense again and missed on his only pass attempt. A holding penalty and a sack held the offense in check.
Sixth set
Taysom Hill saw his first work of the afternoon and went 1-2 for five yards.
Seventh Set
The longest set of the day belonged to James Lark who went 6=10 for 49 yards — guiding the offense steadily down the field for the touchdown. Jamaal Williams accounted for the score on a four-yard run up the middle. Receiver Dylan Collie had a great reception on the sideline during a third-and-long situation to set up Williams’ TD run.
The rest
Ammon Olsen saw limited work and completed his lone pass attempt to Hine for 15 yards.Taysom Hill then guided the offense 83 yards for a touchdown. Hill went 3-5 during his set for 83 yards which included a 37-yard touchdown strike to receiver Terenn Houk. Houk started the drive off with a 30-yard reception. Thompson contributed a 16-yard grab during the set.

Brandon, we have heard Jamaal Williams is listed at 190. Do you think that is enough weight to succeed at this level? I know Ronnie Jenkins was the same weight, but he was but several inches shorter.
He looks big enough at a glance. He could stand to gain a few pounds, but he’s hardly a skinny freshman…dude is built pretty well for a freshman from my point of view.
I was unable to attend the scrimmage, what is it about Williams (beside his speed) that has everyone so excited? Does he catch well? Run guys over?
Also I see that Jordan Smith caught a pass, he was fairly highly touted out of high school but beyond this I haven’t seen any word on him getting the field this year? Any Insight?
There are A LOT of WRs on scholarship trying to get into the rotation. Reps have been limited for all of them as a result. Smith looked good today. Williams is very quick around the edges and is okay catching the football. He can take a hit, but he’s not someone I’d define as a bruiser. He has an exciting running style to him that is not common at BYU.
Any suprise standouts on the defensive end?
Remington Peck had a sack and Theodore King had a couple of nice tackles.
What is your take JLD #56? As we are thin on the DL this year, is he someone who could see sometime at DE? I know he isn’t overly big but I hear he’s a beast and difficult to block. Besides Manu, Fuga, and Russell T., who do you see making a contribution on the DL this year?
They’re going to need some quality backups. The starting three are VERY good, but you need guys to rotate in on the DL. Very anxious to see what Russell Tialavea can do and there is certainly room for guys like King and JLD to contribute as true freshmen. Both of those guys have impressed early on. Tui Crichton has switched to defense and looked good today at the nose position.
Gman, Thanks for the updates. My work productivity is severely lacking. lol. keep ‘em coming please!
Gman,
Ever since Coach French left, I’ve wondered how good our O line coaching has been. Whats your perception?
Coach Weber is a very popular coach with the players. They absolutely love him. Weber is a funny and laid-back guy who often sits around after practices to joke around with his players. They seem to respond to him very well.
How is Terrenn Houck looking. Sounds like he did well today.
Houk really knows how to go up and get the football. He has very good ball skills — maybe the best of the wideouts other than Hoffman. He’s not quick or fast and could be moved to YR before it’s all said and done. He reminds me a lot of Marcus Mathews.
What did you think of Lark? I attended the scrimmage today and was not impressed with his play. I would like to see Munns at #2.
Also, there is a slew of TE’s and I saw a lot of dropped balls from them. Is anyone standing out at that position? Seems like the job has been just waiting for someone to take it!
That was the best performance from Munns that I’ve seen…ever. Lark has struggled this fall for whatever reason and it may pave the way for Taysom Hill to do backup duty.
I think you’re exactly right concerning the TEs. Someone needs to step up and take the starting role. Holt did it last fall, but has been gimpy coming off an injury. Mathews is clearly the best receiving TE, but has to prove able to be an every-down guy.
It sounds like they are definitely not going to redshirt Jamaal Williams. Is that perception correct? I think they should redshirt the 17 year old but it seems like maybe he has speed like none of the other running backs and they feel like they can use that speed this year. Your thoughts on it.
Respectfully disagree on redshirting Williams. I think you need to get a young kid like that immediately. Not to just make him feel part of the team, but because he’s simply very good with a lot of potential.
I respect your respectful disagreement.
How did Ziggy do? How much did he play? At what positions did he play?
Ziggy did not participate in today’s scrimmage.
Do you think Munns becomes the number three guy for this year? Sounds like Munns had a banner day, but I was wondering if he steps up to be the number three guy. I guess what I am asking is he what has been holding him back. Is he not talented, athletic, or consistent?
Hopefully this was a breakout day for Munns. He hasn’t shown much during past practice sessions and hasn’t done much of anything so far this fall until today. We’ll see how they divide the reps here soon and it will be interesting to see if Munns gets more work.
