Halftime: San Diego State 31, BYU 30
So far, this battle has lived up to the hype as No. 4 San Diego State takes a 31-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
It’s been a intense, back-and-forth game that figures to go down to the wire. The score has been tied five times and there have been 12 lead changes.
Jimmer Fredette has scored 20 points, including the Cougars’ final 15 points of the half. It’s been a very physical game, evidenced by a long scratch on the back of Fredette’s arm that stretches to his back.
The Aztecs’ Kawhi Leonard, who is suffering from the flu, has scored 13 points, including a 3-pointer with three seconds left. Fredette tried to answer with a halfcourt shot at the buzzer, but it missed.
Brandon Davies has been strong for BYU, scoring eight points on 4-for-5 shooting from the field, though he has two fouls. Jackson Emery has missed all four of his 3-point attempts. BYU will need Emery to hit some shots in the second half.
Neither team is shooting particularly well (BYU 44 percent, SDSU 40 percent). The Aztecs are outrebounding the Cougars, 20-15. At this point, the pace of the game favors SDSU. We’ll see if that changes in the second half.
