Honors coming BYU's way today
Here’s what I expect to learn today about BYU hoops. First, after two dramatic wins at the South Padre Island Invitational last week, and with teams like Temple and Butler having bad weeks, the Cougars should move up in the AP Top 25 and finally crack the ESPN/USA Today coaches’ Top 25. What might keep those move-ups from happening is if Connecticut and UNLV leapfrog BYU from out of the polls to being ranked. The Huskies had a huge week, beating two Top 10 teams, and UNLV won the 76 Classic in impressive fashion. Don’t be surprised if three MWC teams – San Diego State (6-0), BYU (6-0) and UNLV (6-0) are all ranked this week. New Mexico (4-1) took a big hit in its poll consideration with a 20-point loss at Cal.
Also, Jimmer Fredette should win the MWC player of the week for the first time this season and sixth time of his career. He was the MVP of the South Padre Island Invitational by scoring 32 points and 24 points in two BYU wins last week.
At practice today I should learn more about the injury status of sophomore forward Chris Collinsworth, who missed most of the Mississippi Valley State game and both games on South Padre Island with a sprained foot/bruised bone. Last I heard he won’t play on Wednesday at Creighton and is a maybe for Saturday’s game at EnergySolutions against Hawaii. The Cougars really missed him on the boards in Texas last week.
