Harrison officially signs with BYU
Christ School basketball coach David Gaines told me that Damarcus Harrison signed his letter of intent this morning to play for BYU next season and faxed the letter off to Cougar coach Dave Rose. I also believe Isaac Neilson will sign his letter of intent today as well, and I expect BYU will release some kind of an announcement sometime today regarding both recruits.
Harrison, a 6-foot-5 guard who can play the two or three and averaged about 12 points and four rebounds last season for the 37-2 Christ School Greenies, a prep academy in Asheville, N.C., had offers from Clemson, Florida State, Marquette, Oklahoma State, South Florida and Wisconsin. He has a three-star rating from Scout.com and is No. 38 in the country at the shooting guard position.
Neilson, a 6-foot-10, 205-pound senior at Mission Viejo High School in Mission Viejo, Calif. won’t actually suit up for the Cougars until 2014. He won’t join BYU’s program until then because he turns 19 in December 2011 and plans to serve a two-year LDS Church mission first. He had offers from Utah State, Army, UC-Irvine and UC-Santa Barbara. Gonzaga and Boise State were also showing interest. Last season, as a junior, he averaged about nine points, nine rebounds and five blocks per game – earning first-team All-South Coast League honors.
Returning missionaries Nate Austin (Lone Peak) and Ian Harward (Orem High) will also sign new scholarship offers. Both signed letters of intent two years ago.
