Are July recruiting periods on way out?
In case you haven’t heard, the NCAA is considering doing away with the July basketball evaluation periods, where college coaches travel around the country to attend various AAU tournaments and showcases. The theory is that eliminating the July period will clean up some of the problems related to agents, shoe companies and AAU coaches themselves. BYU coach Dave Rose had this to say about the proposal: “The July evaluation period is really good for us to be able to get out and see a lot of players in an unlimited evaluation setting during those times. But with that being said, I do believe that the recruiting calendar for Division I basketball has been in place for 20 to 25 years and the game has really changed. There’s probably a need to have that looked at and re-evaluated. It looks like that the push is to eliminate July to force the committee to re-evaluate the whole recruiting model. So we’ll see how that plays out.”
Rose also said college basketball officials will have an experimental rule at their disposal this season on charging calls around the basket, similar to how the NBA calls it regarding an arc under the basket. “One of the points of emphasis this year is to call the game the way it’s in the rule book right now, so we’ll see how that works.”
Here’s Dick Vitale’s take on the proposed elimination of the July evaluation periods.
