Heaps' second start
BYU quarterback Jake Heaps will make his second career start Friday night in a hostile environment at Utah State. He’s the first true freshman right out of high school to start more than one game in Cougar history.
USU defensive coordinator Bill Busch is impressed with what he’s seen of Heaps on film.
“I have never seen a panic on him,” he said. “I have watched every snap of his this year and he doesn’t panic, he stays very calm. He is very mature, he commands the huddle and he commands the team. For a true freshman, he is very impressive.”
BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said Heaps showed glimpses of his potential in the Nevada game.
“I thought Jake played very well for his first college start. He’s more mature and poised than what I gave him credit for. I liked his resiliency, I liked the way he bounced up after sacks. I liked the way he responded even when he didn’t make the critical throw. I like his hope and optimism, with an exceptional talent in terms of being able to throw the football. It’s one start from a true freshman quarterback with a long career ahead. I was pleased with it and I told him that after the game.”
