BYU moving away from QB rotation

BYU opened the season with quarterbacks Riley Nelson and Jake Heaps alternating series. It was effective in the season-opening win against Washington, but things went terribly awry in the loss last weekend at Air Force.

During coach Bronco Mendenhall’s Q&A with reporters this morning, he said the plan is to move away from a rotation. He said both QBs will play, but it will be based on situations and the opponent. Mendenhall said he and the offensive staff, whom he met with this morning, are formulating a game plan for how to use the quarterbacks this week when the Cougars visit Florida State.

The decision to not play Heaps in the second half, Mendenhall explained, was to go with the more experienced Nelson. BYU passed for only 88 yards against the Falcons. “We need to throw the ball more effectively,” Mendenhall said. After two games, the Cougars are No. 91 in the nation in passing offense.
