Cougars conclude fall camp

BYU wrapped up fall camp Wednesday morning with a 35-40-play scrimmage at its outdoor practice field.
Coach Bronco Mendenhall said the intent was to determine depth and make decisions on redshirt candidates. He also described the scrimmage as “sloppy.”
There were some memorable plays, however. Tight end Marcus Mathews reached up and caught a 20-yard pass from Riley Nelson with one hand. Mathews pulled the ball down and managed to hang on to it.
Jake Heaps had one of the best throws we’ve seen in camp. On third-and-23, Heaps threw a perfect strike to Rhen Brown, who beat cornerback DeQuan Everett for a touchdown.
Overall, Heaps completed 10-of-15 passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns while Nelson was 3-for-4 for 48 yards and an interception (by linebacker Brandon Ogletree).
Asked if anything’s changed in the quarterback battle, Medenhall replied, “Nope, it is the same.”
Heaps engineered four of the six series during the scrimmage. Asked if he’s leaning toward a primary QB, Mendenhall said, “Nope. I’m not.”
Joshua Quezada had five catches for 49 yards today and Ross Apo had two catches for 20 yards and a 19-yard touchdown from Heaps. Brown had two catches for 38 yards.
BYU begins “game week” practice tomorrow as the Cougars prepare in earnest for Washington. The depth chart, scout team and redshirt candidates are likely to be shored up by the coaches.
