BYU, Utah and New Big 12?
Now that speculation and reports are intensifying that the Pac-10 may invite half of the Big 12 (Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Colorado) to form a 16-team superconference, where does that leave BYU and Utah?
And what about Boise State, which figures to be invited to join the Mountain West soon?
Pretty much everything is speculative, and fluid, at this point, so here’s another possible scenario, should the Pac-10 indeed swallow up half of the Big 12. That would leave Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Baylor in the Big 12, although it’s been reported that Missouri may bolt for the Big Ten. Let’s assume that happens.
What if the Big 12, or the five remaining, were to rebuild by inviting BYU, Utah, TCU, Colorado State, San Diego State, UNLV, and Boise State?
There could be two six-team divisions. The Mountain Division would comprise BYU, Utah, Boise State, UNLV, San Diego State and Colorado State while the Plains Division would be made up of TCU, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, Baylor and Iowa State. That way, many rivalries would remain intact while limiting travel costs. A Big 12 championship game could be staged and the league’s TV footprint would stretch from Dallas and San Diego, and include Kansas City, Salt Lake City, Denver, and Las Vegas.
By playing under the Big 12 banner, the MWC schools would be part of a BCS automatic qualifying conference.
Of course, that would leave a few MWC schools out in the cold — Wyoming, New Mexico and Air Force — which would have to find a new home. Wyoming and New Mexico could join the WAC and Air Force could become an independent like Navy.
This is all speculation, of course, but when it comes to the expansion issue, at this point, anything is possible, right?
What do you think will happen?
