Honors handed out at BYU hoops banquet
The BYU men’s basketball team held its annual end-of-the-season banquet Wednesday night at the Provo Marriott, and here’s a list of those who were honored;
Academic excellence – Brandon Davies
Best conditioned perimeter player – Charles Abouo
Best conditioned post player – Chris Miles
Most inspirational – Tyler Haws
Most improved – Noah Hartsock
Sixth man of the year – Jonathan Tavernari
Most competitive – Jackson Emery
Coaches’ award – Lamont Morgan Jr.
Outstanding player – Jimmer Fredette
Morgan and Emery were also honored for their duties as captains. Emery, Haws, Tavernari and Fredette were presented some of their many other national and conference postseason awards as well. Coach Dave Rose and his wife Cheryl also recognized the wives of Emery, Tavernari, Miles and James Anderson. It was also revealed that Hartsock, Logan Magnusson, Brock Zylstra and practice-squad player Tanner Lamb are each getting married in the next few weeks, which means the Cougars will have six married players on the team next season.
Originally, Haws was scheduled to leave for his LDS mission to the Philippines in June, but he’s now leaving next week, which means he’ll have more time to get back into game shape when he returns in two years.
One other tidbit I picked up at the banquet. A story on PostStar.com claims Fredette has decided to declare for the NBA draft in hopes of getting invited to some NBA workouts. However, even though most feel Fredette probably will take that path, and then withdraw from the draft unless he’s getting solid feedback that he’ll be a high first-round pick, BYU officials say Fredette has not yet decided whether to submit his name for the draft. But, he has to make that decision prior to April 28. The deadline to withdraw from the draft is May 8.
All three departing seniors will graduate from BYU. Morgan will get his degree in recreational management, Miles in psychology and Tavernari in business. Morgan is hoping to play professional basketball overseas next fall. Miles is hoping to get invited to some NBA workouts and catch on with a Summer League team, or sign a deal to play overseas. Tavernari will spend the next two months working out with a trainer in Indiana, and if he doesn’t catch on with an NBA team he also has some offers to pursue overseas. Later this summer, Tavernari will return to playing for the Brazilian national team and Abouo is expected to rejoin the Ivory Coast national team.
