BYU's recruiting classes, 2002-2005
Okay, I know it’s been two weeks since Signing Day. Around that time, I posted a list of all of BYU’s official signees from 2006-2009 and what happened to them. After some more research, here are the recruiting classes from 2002-2005.
Which of these classes would you say is the best?
2002
DB James Allen — Played in 2002, left team.
RB Reynaldo Brathwaite — Played only one season (2003), holds BYU record for longest scoring run (95 yards).
DB Chad Barney — Starter at cornerback in 2002, 2003.
RB Curtis Brown — Played four years, is No. 2 all-time in career rushing yards, All-MWC.
WR Daniel Coats — Converted into TE, played four seasons. Now in NFL with Cincinnati Bengals.
WR Ferron Fonoimoana — Never played at BYU.
TE Andrew George — Productive, unheralded player who caught game-winner vs. Utah in 2009.
TE Jonny Harline — Two-year starter, All-MWC performer, caught game-winner vs. Utah in 2006.
DL Jonathan Fanene — Never played at BYU — ended up at Utah. Now Daniel Coats’ NFL teammate in Cincinnati.
LB Paulo Fuaalii — Redshirted in 2002, but never played for BYU.
DB Kellen Fowler — Starter at safety in 2007 and 2008.
DL Jake Kuresa — Switched to OL, started 47 of 48 games at BYU. All-MWC.
DB Nate Hutchinson — Played in 2006 but career cut short due to injury.
LB Bryan Kehl — Played four years, earned first-team All-MWC honors as senior, was a 4th round NFL draft pick, plays for NY Giants.
RB Mulivai Pula — Never played for BYU.
RB Taufui Vakapuna — Played four years at BYU, 7th round pick of Cincinnati Bengals.
DB Travonne Jackson — Lettered in 2002 before leaving team.
DL Shaun Nua — Played three seasons.
DL William Tukuafu — Never played for BYU. Playing at Oregon, where he was 2nd team All-Pac-10 selection in 2009.
RB Thomas Stancil — Redshirted in 2002, lettered in 2003 before leaving team.
QB Ben Olson — Nation’s No. 1 prep quarterback redshirted, served a mission, transferred to UCLA. Career marred by injuries.
P Tyson Dunham — Lettered in 2002 and 2003.
DB Aaron Singh — Lettered in 2005 and 2006.
DB Walt Williams — Never enrolled at BYU.
2003
LB Matt Ah You — Played for BYU in 2003, 2004 and 2008 before transferring to Div. I-AA school in 2009.
DB Aaron Attig — Lettered in 2005, 2006, 2007.
DL Brett Denney — Two-year starter, finished eligibility in 2009.
OL Ofa Mohetau — Highly touted recruit started eight games as a true freshman before leaving team. Ended up at Texas Tech.
LB David Nixon — Played four seasons, starting two. Was 2nd team All-MWC as senior in 2008.
K/P Mitch Payne — BYU’s starting kicker since 2007.
OL Dallas Reynolds — Started all 51 games of his career, 1st team All-MWC as senior in 2008.
DL Brian Soi — Spent one year at BYU, in 2003, before moving on to Utah State. Now playing in the NFL with Green Bay Packers.
OL Jason Speredon — Was projected to start last year before suffering season-ending injury. Is expected to play in 2010.
TE Dan Van Sweden — Switched to LB, was a four-year letterman before finishing career in 2009.
DB Walt Williams — On the list of signees again for the second straight year, but never showed up in Provo. (See Class of 2002.)
OL R.J. Willing — Started all 13 games last year as a senior at center.
2004
OL Nick Alletto — Started 11 games in 2009, projected starter in 2010.
QB Jason Beck — Started one game for injured John Beck in 2005.
LB Karlan Bennett — Never played for BYU.
QB Jacob Bower — Never played for BYU — transferred, now at Tulsa.
OL Terence Brown — Started all 13 games at right tackle last season as sophmore.
WR Austin Collie — Holds BYU’s all-time receiving yards record. Fourth round pick of Colts enjoyed stellar rookie year and is playing in this weekend’s Super Bowl.
OL Ray Feinga — Two-time All-MWC 1st team selection, currently plays for NFL’s Miami Dolphins.
DL Vince Feula — Played for BYU in 2004 and 2005.
DL Isley Filiaga — Redshirted in 2004. Never played for BYU.
WR Joe Griffin — Redshirted in 2004, lettered in 2005.
WR Antwaun Harris — Played in 11 games in 2004 before leaving team.
LB Gary Lovely — Played in 2003 and 2004.
DB Greg Lovely — Lettered in 2004.
OL Nick Longshore — Career cut short due to injury.
LB Justin Luettgerodt — Played in 2004, started all 12 games for BYU as a senior in 2005.
RS B.J. Mathis — Never played at BYU.
WR Michael Morris — Lettered in 2004 and played in 2005.
DB Drew Mugleston — Redshirted in 2005. Never played at BYU.
LB Grant Nelson — Part of BYU’s linebacker rotation in 2009.
DL Matt Putnam — Part of BYU’s defensive line rotation in 2008, 2009.
DB Ibrahim Rashada — Never played at BYU.
WR Michael Reed — Productive, reliable receiver for four years with John Beck and Max Hall.
DB Eddie Scipio — Never played at BYU.
DB Billy Skinner — Never played at BYU.
LB William Turner, Jr. — Never played at BYU.
WR Todd Watkins — Recieved 1st team All-MWC honors in 2005, went on to the NFL.
WR Riley Weber — Played receiver and was two-year starting holder.

OL Sete Aulai — Two-year starter at center, All-MWC selection.
WR Luke Ashworth — Reliable receiver for three seasons. Will be a senior in 2010.
DL Tyler Berry — Never played at BYU.
LB Chris Bolden — Played in 2006, 2007.
DB Stephen Covey — Switched from DB to QB to WR.
LB Shawn Doman — Starter at LB last season as a senior.
WR Spencer Hafoka — Part of receiving rotation past two seasons.
LB Terrance Hooks — Played four years, career hampered by injuries.
DB Brandon Howard — Starter in 2008, left team before 2009 season.
DB Cade Hulbert — Never played for BYU. Transferred to Boise State.
DL Jan Jorgensen — Started all 52 games in his career, three-time All-MWC first team.
RB Bryan Kariya — Had huge game in last year’s win over Oklahoma.
LB Kyle Luekenga — Played sparingly during career as a backup.
P Derek McLaughlin — Two-year starter at punter.
OL Matt Reynolds — Two-year starter at left tackle; freshman All-American in 2008.
DB Justin Robinson — Starter at cornerback in 2005, 2006.
RB Harvey Unga — BYU’s all-time leading rusher with more than 3,000 yards; 2007 MWC freshman of the year.
TE Vic So’oto — Switched to DL, career slowed by injuries.
DL Russell Tialavea — Key contributor/starter for three seasons. Now serving mission.
OL Peter Vailahi — Never played for BYU.
