Recruiting update: BYU losing a commitment to Notre Dame?
This could be some bad news for BYU’s football program — talented defensive end Kona Schwenke out of Kahuku High in Hawaii apparently is re-thinking his verbal commitment to BYU. Scout.com is reporting that Schwenke “has recently started to look at other options” and is making an official visit to Notre Dame this weekend — just days before Wednesday’s signing day. Last summer, Schwenke flew from Hawaii to Utah to commit to BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall.
The Web site said Notre Dame has not offered Schwenke, who is regarded as one of the best defensive players to come out of Hawaii this year, a scholarship. Several other schools, like Arizona, Washington, and Oregon State are also pursuing him. During Schwenke’s trip to South Bend, he’ll be sure to spend time with another LDS player from Hawaii, Manti Te’o, who spurned BYU and signed with the Fighting Irish last year.
