Record watch
Even the most casual BYU fan knows that barring a late-season meltdown, Max Hall will break Ty Detmer’s all-time wins record in the next few weeks. Hall’s pursuit of the record has been well documented the past few weeks but many fans may not realize that Hall is not the only Cougar who has a chance to set a record in the near future.
Harvey Unga now has 3,151 career rushing yard and is within 70 yards of Curtis Brown’s all-time BYU rushing record of 3,221 yards. Jamal Willis held the the record with 2,970 yards until Brown broke it in 2006. Former New Mexico running back DonTrell Moore holds the all-time MWC record with 4,973 rushing yards.
After making all seven of his PAT attempts against Wyoming, BYU kicker Mitch Payne is within nine of breaking the all-time MWC record for most career PATs, which is currently held by his brother Matt.* Mitch now has 141 PATs for his career and passed former Utah kicker Louie Sakoda for second on the list last week.
*Despite the coincidence of sharing the same name, I am actually not the Matt Payne mentioned above. I’m sorry if this is terribly disappointing to anybody out there.
