Jacobson's injury and other news

As was reported on our Web site a little while ago, BYU wide receiver McKay Jacobson is out 4-6 weeks with a hamstring pull. The injury was revealed during an MRI over the weekend.

Jacobson has 11 catches for 280 yards and three touchdowns this season. With his speed, he’s been the deep threat for the Cougars (he averages a team-high 25.5 yards per catch). With him out for a significant period of time, BYU will rely even more on O’Neill Chambers, Luke Ashworth, Spencer Hafoka and true freshman Brett Thompson.

BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall, who announced the injury during his weekly Monday morning news conference, said the injury occurred during warmups while Jacobson was stretching. He missed the Utah State game, though at the time the injury didn’t appear to be as serious as it turned out to be.

Without Jacobson in the lineup on Friday, Ashworth caught five passes for 91 yards while O’Neill Chambers had two catches for 15 yards. Tight end Dennis Pitta hauled in five receptions for 83 yards.

In other news, left tackle Matt Reynolds, who limped off the field Friday, will be fine. Steven Thomas and Tucker Lamb both sustained concussions last week and they’ll have to go through the normal protocol to assess their status for this week at UNLV.

Mendenhall said today he sees areas for improvement for his team. He said his team is “solid” right now but has a lot of work to do to be in the “great” category.
