BYU hoops has some stiff competition now for Harrison
BYU has been courting DeMarcus Harrison, the 6-foot-4 guard now attending a prep school in North Carolina, for most of the past year. However, interest in Harrison is heating up. He recently received a scholarship offer from Virginia, and is also being recruited now by Stanford, South Carolina, Clemson, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Oklahoma and Florida. When BYU first began recruiting Harrison, who is LDS, the only other school interested was Charleston.
Virginia is also BYU’s stiffest competition for Provo High guard Kyle Collinsworth, who made his official campus visit to BYU last weekend. Collinsworth is still being recruited by USC to play either the point, the 2 or the 3, even though he says he’s scratched the Trojans from his list. Arizona State also wants Collinsworth to give it a second look now that the Sun Devils have landed 7-foot-2 center Jordan Bachynski. The last I heard was that Collinsworth was planning to visit Virginia, even though he was at the campus this summer for the NBA Top 100 camp, but the visit hadn’t been scheduled yet.
Another shooting guard that BYU was interested in – Joey Harris from Chelan, Wash. – already committed to Virginia coach Tony Bennett last month.
Anyone who thinks recruiting is easy business should understand by now how challenging it really is. BYU’s coaches have their hands full trying to get these top players into their program. It’s non-stop work and they’re getting little sleep right now.
