Scrimmage report

There was rain and wind for BYU’s first scrimmage of fall camp. Clearly concerned with the number of injuries sustained through the first week, coach Bronco Mendenhall scaled back the number of plays, to a little less than 50. Originally, the plan was to run 70 plays. But with left tackle Jason Speredon suffering a season-ending rotator cuff injury, Mendenhall is especially cautious.

Andrew George was the star of the scrimmage, hauling in five passes for 90 yards. McKay Jacobson caught the only touchdown pass, an 11-yarder from Max Hall. The Cougar quarterback was 18 of 21 for 189 yards.

There were a number of holding and false start penalties, which is to be expected of an offensive line that features two redshirt freshmen — Braden Hansen at left tackle and Marco Thorson at left guard.

The key now for the BYU coaching staff is getting the players enough work without getting any more injured.

The Cougars kick off against Oklahoma three weeks from today.
