A few more BYU basketball updates
The busy summer of highly recruited Kyle Collinsworth, a 6-foot-6 guard from Provo High, is winding down and the senior-to-be is now deciding on which colleges he’ll visit this fall. Last time I talked to him his list of five included BYU, Arizona State, Virginia, Stanford and Kansas. But he has a lot of other schools interested so that list might change before next month when he can start his visits.
Currently the list of schools eyeing the backcourt star are Stanford, Arizona State, Baylor, BYU, Colorado, Georgetown, Gonzaga, Florida, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, SMU, UCLA, UNLV, Utah, Utah State, USC, Virginia, and Wake Forest. The latest in the group is USC, which offered a scholarship after watching Collinsworth play in the Best of Summer tournament in California. College coaches like Collinsworth’s ability to get to the rim pretty much at will, his floor vision and overall basketball savvy.
So how good of a summer has Collinsworth had? In Las Vegas he scored 25 points, 23 points and 22 points in two other games. In one game in California he had 29 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and two steals on 14-21 from the field. The following game he had 26 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists, and two steals on 8-10 shooting from the field. In a third game he compiled had 24 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 4 blocks.
BYU’s International stars: In case you didn’t know it, BYU’s Jonathan Tavernari is competing this summer for the Brazilian national team and Charles Abouo for the Ivory Coast national team. BYU’s Kyle Chilton is keeping up on their experience and you can keep track by clicking on these links:
Former BYU basketball player Jordan Cameron is making good progress as a receiver for the USC Trojans. Here’s a clip from a blog by Orange County Register writer Michael Lev, who covers USC football:
1. Not just Air Jordan anymore
A year ago, former BYU basketball player Jordan Cameron made a strong early impression in camp, using his leaping ability and 6-foot-5 frame to make several spectacular jump-ball catches. Cameron was so good, in fact, that a couple of us writers set the over/under line for Cameron TD catches ridiculously high. Especially when you consider he didn’t catch a single pass of any kind the entire season.
Fast-forward to August 2009, and Cameron’s at it again – only this time, he looks like a more well-rounded receiver. Strength and conditioning coach Chris Carlisle had told Pete Carroll to keep an eye on Cameron after a summer in which the junior transfer made himself quicker and more explosive. “And sure enough, he came out and had a heck of a day,” Carroll said. “That’s a great start for him. He’s ready to play football.”
