BYU fall camp: Day 2
After Monday’s afternoon session, coach Bronco Mendenhall said, “I think the whole team looked sharp.”
Quarterback Max Hall threw touchdown passes to McKay Jacobson, Spencer Hafoka and Dennis Pitta during 11-on-11 drills. Mitch Payne had a 25-yard field goal blocked by Scott Johnson.
Fullback Manase Tonga is still not at practice, and, is not expected to be at camp until next week. He recently finished some classes and his grades are supposed to be posted Friday. During the end of one series, near the goal line, tight end Andrew George lined up at fullback to help create a hole for Harvey Unga, who danced into the end zone.
Linebacker Terrance Hooks suffered a hamstring injury early in practice. It’s not known when he’ll return, but he’s not expected to be sidelined long.
Returned missionary Robbie Buckner was entrenched with the first team defense. He’s vying for the starting job at field corner. Mendenhall praised Buckner, noting that it’s still early in camp. He did say it’s going to be difficult for any of the other cornerback candidates to overtake Buckner.
Offensive lineman Stetson Tenney, a walk-on from Show Low, Ariz., decided to leave the program Monday.
