BYU's 21st commitment — a defensive back from Georgia
I just got off the phone with Kori Gaines, a defensive back from Loganville, Ga. He told me he has verbally pledged to BYU, giving the Cougars 21 commitments toward their class of 2010.
One interesting aspect about Gaines is one of his coaches at Grayson High School is Lenny Gregory, who was known as Lenny Gomes when he played on the defensive line at BYU (1991-93). Gregory sent highlight film of Gaines to BYU coaches, who took a trip to Georgia to meet him as well as a couple of other players there.
Gaines visited Provo a couple of weeks ago and told me he “fell in love” with the campus and with the coaching staff. Though he is not LDS, Gaines said the school’s honor code is “the way I live my everyday life.”
Gregory told me that Gaines is fearless and physical. He has run a 4.4 in the 40 and has returned kicks (including a 99-yarder for a touchdown).
Coach Jaime Hill told Gaines that, as of now, he’ll play safety. Gregory said that he could really help the Cougars’ defensive secondary, but that Gaines could play receiver, too. “He reminds me of (former BYU wide receiver) Eric Drage,” Gregory said.
BYU is the only Division I school to offer Gaines a scholarship.
