Cummard latches on with hometown team
Lee Cummard, in an interview last December, told me of how he grew up in Mesa, Ariz. cheering on Charles Barkley and the Phoenix Suns. Now, Cummard has a chance to be one of those Suns. He announced on Monday, through BYU’s sports information department, that he’ll play for the Suns summer league team in Las Vegas in two weeks. I’m sure he’s elated at the opportunity, after not being drafted, to prove himself to not only the Suns but other NBA teams as well. But, if Cummard is not invited to an NBA camp in the fall, I’m betting his agent Chris Emens has a backup plan for him to play overseas. My hunch is that the new, beefed up Cummard, will open some eyes and will get his shot with an NBA team, if not this year then some year soon. He has as many basketball skills as other players who have made it in the NBA, and his all-around unselfish style will find a niche with some team some where.
