Big plays for BYU offense

BYU quarterback aired it out a bit during Monday’s 11-on-11 scrimmage (the Cougars weren’t in pads). On his first series, Hall connected with Luke Ashworth for 39 yards, then, on his next attempt, found O’Neill Chambers for 31 yards. Hall capped the drive one play later with a five-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dennis Pitta.

Later, Hall completed a short pass to running back J.J. DiLuigi, who raced 59 yards for a TD. For the day, Hall completed 12 of 19 passes for 224 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Ashworth finished with two catches for 49 yards.

Still, the defense had its moments as well, highlighted by a couple of sacks by linebacker Jameson Frazier, a sophomore from Alta High School. Clearly, though, the defense missed not having cornerback Brandon Bradley, who is nursing a sprained ankle, and safety Scott Johnson, who sat out with a hamstring injury.

Coach Bronco Mendenhall said he was happy to see both sides make plays.

Watching the proceedings were a number of recruits, most notably Jake Heaps, touted as the No. 1 high school quarterback in the nation.

Also on hand were defensive back Brian Logan, a JC transfer, and Spanish Fork tight end Richard Wilson. Both Logan and Wilson signed with the Cougars in February but are not yet enrolled in school.

The Cougars plan to practice Wednesday and Friday. After Friday’s practice, spring drills will come to an end. Mendenhall said he plans to use Friday as a scrimmage for the program’s younger players.
