Cougars get a tough first-round draw

I’ve already heard one analyst say the Texas A&M Aggies are a better version of the San Diego State Aztecs, and a team that is very athletic and tough to guard. Just from what I know, this is a tough match-up for BYU in Thursday’s first-round game in Philadelphia.
The Cougars showed mixed emotions when the bid was announced, especially after it had been announced earlier that Utah was a No. 5 seed. I think the Cougars felt they deserved at least a seven spot. And I agree with anyone who says the Cougars are not three seeds worse than Utah. I’m not saying the Utes shouldn’t be a No. 5 seed, but since they are, BYU should be a 6 or 7.
I also don’t think BYU likes the idea of having a rematch with the Aggies. It’s surprising that the Committee would do that. Three of the players who hurt BYU in last year’s first-round loss are back. But I’m not sure which team the familiarity favors. The Cougars want revenge, so that could be a plus. But the Aggies might have a touch more confidence feeling they got a good draw in facing a team they took care of one year ago.
The No. 1 thing I take from Sunday’s bid announcements is the Selection Committee is becoming similar to the BCS. A lot of unfair and hard to understand seeds, selections and omissions. Only four bids to non-power conference teams is wrong. Leaving San Diego State out of the tournament is wrong. Giving the Mountain West Conference only two bids in the league’s strongest year ever, is wrong. Remember one thing. Almost every team with a No. 6 seed or higher would refuse an invite for a home-and-home series to play at the Marriott Center or The Pitt.
