Pro Day report; Manase Tonga ready to re-enroll at BYU
I spent the afternoon at BYU observing Pro Day. Every year, it seems, more and more people attend — family and friends, former players and current players. Among the former players included Bryan Kehl, Vai Sikahema, Chad Lewis, Justin Ena (who now coaches at Southern Utah) and Bret Engemann.
Upon seeing Engemann, I said hello. Then Engemann quipped, “Is C.J. Ah You here?”
That was in reference to an incident that happened six years ago during an NFL workout, when Ah You, a defensive lineman, punched Engemann, a quarterback, in the face over a woman who had apparently dated both players. Engemann heard his name, turned around, and got cold-cocked.
Anyway, it was good to see he has a sense of humor about it.
While C.J. (who ended up transferring and playing at Oklahoma) wasn’t there, his brother Matt, a current Cougar linebacker, was. So were numerous other BYU players who are set to start spring ball next Monday — Max Hall, McKay Jacobson, Jan Jorgensen, Dennis Pitta, to name just a few.
As for the workout, 13 draft-eligible former Cougars participated, including Austin Collie, Travis Bright, David Nixon, Ray Feinga, Fui Vakapuna, Michael Reed and Dallas Reynolds. Nixon may have really helped himself by running a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash.
Bright had 35 bench press reps, one better than he had at the NFL combine.
I talked to Collie and Bright and both are optimistic about their NFL chances. Those two, and Ray Feinga, have the best shot at getting drafted in April.
After Pro Day, I caught up with Manase Tonga, who attended the event. He said he plans to be enrolled at BYU at the end of April for spring semester. He is eager to rejoin the team after sitting out last season due to academic issues.
