Reed and Reynolds to play in All-Star game
BYU sent out a release about two Cougar seniors participating in an All-Star game this weekend.
PROVO, Utah ‘ BYU wide receiver Michael Reed and offensive lineman Dallas Reynolds have been selected to play in the Texas vs. the Nation All-Star Challenge on Jan. 31 at the Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas.
Both BYU seniors will represent the state of Texas in a game that pits top collegiate players originally from Texas or who play college football in Texas against top players from around the nation. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. MT and will be broadcast nationally on CBS-College Sports.
Reed and Reynolds are two of seven Mountain West Conference players who will participate in the game. Running backs Devin Moore of Wyoming and Frank Summers of UNLV will join TCU’s tight end Kory Sperry, safety Stephen Hodge and offensive lineman Blake Schlueter. All seven MWC players are listed on the Texas roster.
Reed and Reynolds were both starters on BYU offensive units that ranked among the best in the nation each of the past four seasons. While becoming one of only seven teams nationally to win 10 or more games the last three years, BYU’s offense was ranked No. 4 in both passing and total offense in 2006, No. 14 in passing and No. 25 in total offense in 2007 and No. 6 in passing and No. 16 in total offense in 2008.
A native of Baytown, Texas, Reed started 39 games for BYU since his freshman season in 2005. The 6-foot-1, 202-pound wide receiver caught 10 career touchdowns, and recorded a career-high 132 yards receiving on eight receptions against Tulsa in 2007. In his final game as a Cougar, Reed racked up 117 yards receiving on nine catches against Arizona in the 2008 Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl.
Dating back to Sept. 3, 2005, BYU’s season opener against Boston College, Reynolds has started each game of his collegiate career, leading the nation with 51 career starts. During that streak, the Provo, Utah native started at every position on the offensive line, including tackle, guard and center. Reynolds was named a freshman All-American by Rivals.com and Sporting News in 2005 and capped his BYU career being named third-team All-American by College Football News.
Since the game’s inception two years ago, only one other Cougar has participated in Texas vs. the Nation. Linebacker Aaron Wagner played on the Texas team in the inaugural game in 2007.
Though relatively new to the postseason all-star collegiate bowl game scene, the Texas vs. the Nation game set a new record number of NFL signees in an all-star game with 102 players signing NFL contracts in 2008.
