University of Phoenix Stadium should stick to football

Here we are, about 30 minutes from tip-off (yes, the game will start about 20 minutes late) and I’m sitting in one strange-feeling basketball arena. Maybe that’s because the University of Phoenix Stadium isn’t really a basketball arena, but they’re trying to make it one so they can start hosting NCAA regionals – which they will in March.
My first impression is that the Cougars probably won’t have another lights-out shooting game in this spacious place. The shooting background is horrible. If you have a baseline jumper, you’re going to have the jumbotron in the background. I saw several airballs in the Louisville/Minnesota game, which just ended with the Gophers upsetting the No. 9 Cardinals.
With all that said, I still think the Cougars have a better chance of upsetting the No. 17 Arizona State Sun Devils in this place rather than the Sun Devils’ normal arena in Tempe. I’m sure this place feels like strange territory to ASU as well.
Anyway, get ready Cougar fans for a great day for BYU athletics. Once this game’s over, turn your attention to football. I’m just glad I get a one-day break from Utah’s weather.
