No surprise, Cummard earns MWC Player of the Week honor

After scoring a career high 36 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, dishing out five assists and blocking four shots against Long Beach State on Friday, Cougar forward Lee Cummard was named Monday as the Mountain West Conference Player of the week. It’s the third in his career that Cummard has received the honor.
His 36 points marks the most points scored by a BYU player since 1993 and ties for the eighth highest individual performance in BYU men’s basketball history. Cummard’s previous career high was 27. His 22 first-half points were also a career high.
Besides hitting 13-of-16 shots, a perfect 7-of-7 from the line and 3-of-3 from behind the arch, Cummard exhibited outstanding leadership in the come-from-behind win. His 36 points were far from a selfish performance. At halftime Cummard realized that his points were coming from the proper flow of BYU’s offense so he encouraged his teammates, who shot a horrible 3-of-21 in the first half, to simply make the extra pass and not try to play catch-up too fast. When the other Cougars heeded that advice is when BYU made its comeback and took over the game.
