More on BYU's basketball redshirt possibilities and probable rotation

After talking to others around BYU’s men’s basketball program, watching the Cougars some in practice and watching them play in the Tipoff and exhibition game Thursday against Concordia, here’s how I now see the issue of which players might be asked to redshirt this season.
Originally I thought Jackson Emery sitting out Thursday’s game was an indication that he is a redshirt candidate. But now I honestly think he just hadn’t recouped from his battle with a severe flu bug. Emery, who returned from a mission this summer, still might be asked to sit out the season to spend a year getting his game back on track, but I doubt it. Mainly, the Cougars are not deep enough in the guard and small-forward spots to afford that luxury. Coach Dave Rose said the battle for the point-guard spot is between Lamont Morgan and Jimmer Fredette. If that’s the case, that means the Cougars need Emery to play some, maybe even start, at the No. 2 spot. What it also means is that it might leave sophomore Michael Loyd struggling to find playing time. Therefore, it makes more sense to redshirt Loyd – who by the way, also sat out Thursday’s exhibition game. Loyd will have a better chance to help the Cougars if he saves a season for after Morgan, a junior, has moved on.
I’m also beginning to think that it’s unlikely that either Charles Abouo or Noah Hartsock will redshirt. I’d be especially shocked if Abouo redshirts because I see him as the guy who comes in to give Cummard a break. Hartsock is probably the leading candidate to be the guy who gives Tavernari a spell, but Hartsock is having some conditioning issues so he’s not out of the woods. Remember, he didn’t return from his mission until July 31.
So, in a nutshell, here’s what I think is going to happen – which means it probably won’t. But still, it’s what I’m seeing. Morgan will start at the point, either Emery or Fredette at No. 2, Cummard at the three, Tavernari four and Chris Miles at center. Either Fredette or Emery will be the first off the bench. If Fredette, then he’ll come in at the one. If Emery, he’ll come in at two and move Fredette to the point. Abouo and Hartsock will give the two main guns – Cummard and Tavernari – some resting time. Gavin McGregor and James Anderson will spell Miles. Matt Pinegar will also get some time at the No. 1 and No. 2.
That leaves little or no playing time for Loyd or freshman walk-on forward Michael Boswell. So, my guess, is those two will both be asked to redshirt. I’m sure we’ll know for sure how coach Rose is leaning prior to next Friday’s season opener against Long Beach State.
