Who are this year's redshirt candidates?

It’s pretty common for basketball coaches to redshirt a player who they think is not quite ready to play or who they’d like to save for another year when the player can likely play and contribute more. BYU coach Dave Rose has already admitted that he’s contemplating redshirting one or two players and it’s pretty much expected that one or two will. But, nobody for sure knows who, other than who it won’t be – Chris Miles, Archie Rose, Jonathan Tavernari, Gavin McGregor, James Anderson, Lamont Morgan, Matt Pinegar and Lee Cummard. So who will it likely be? My bet is he’s looking mostly at Noah Hartsock, who has go-to talent but won’t be a go-to guy this season. If Rose saves a year of Hartsock’s eligibility for later, he might get one more go-to year out of his talent. Also, Hartsock didn’t return from his mission until July 31. However, Hartsock’s play in practice is making the decision mighty difficult for Rose, who knows he has some post holes to fill this season.
“I think his execution has come a long way for a new guy, but his ability to be consistent over a two-hour period kind of varies,” Rose said. “That’s a conditioning issue that we’ve got to deal with. . . but the way he’s playing right now I think he’s ahead of where we thought he’d be.”
Charles Abouo is probably another candidate for many of the same reasons. He likely won’t be an offensive force this season, but will be someday. A longshot is Jackson Emery, only because he also returned from a mission this summer. But Emery is also well ahead in his conditioning.

Rose on where the Mountain West should hold future conference tournaments:
“There’s a lot at stake and I think it should be the same for everybody, just no advantage. And wherever that is, let’s play it there. . . look at where the top 10 leagues in the country and where they have their tournaments. I agree with that.”
