Bronco on Pittman and the Washington job
After practice today, coach Bronco Mendenhall addressed freshman cornerback G Pittman’s decision to transfer.
“Today I met with him at about 2 o’clock. He’d basically been on academic suspension the past four weeks,” Mendenhall said. “Everyone has to make their choice as to whether they really want and value and education and are willing to meet the standards we have here. I think G is anxious to look elsewhere and I support him.’
Mendenhall doesn’t know where Pittman will transfer. ‘You have to be in good academic standing to transfer to another Division I institution. Currently, G is not in good academic standing, which basically would leave a junior college option where he’d have to go there and sort it out before he’d have a chance to elevate. He might have an idea of where he would like to go but it’s going to take a junior college stop in between time.’
On another topic, Washington announced Monday that coach Tyrone Willingham will be replaced at the end of the season. Mendenhall, Utah’s Kyle Whittingham, and others have surfaced as a potential candidates.
When asked about that today, Mendenhall said, ‘I don’t have any comment about it. I haven’t been contacted. It’s just unfortunate that what’s happening in college football is like the NFL where coaches are being fired during the season. I don’t like the trend. I don’t think it’s good for the kids on the team nor do I think it’s good for the game.’
Does he have interest in coaching elsewhere?
‘I only have an interest in coaching here at BYU,’ Mendenhall said.
Will he be at BYU long-term?
‘I don’t think I’m a long-term coach,” he replied.
Does he see himself coaching somewhere other than BYU in the future?
‘I don’t think so. Nor do I think it would be any good for me to even waste any time right now considering it.’
