Collie closer to becoming BYU's leader in career receiving yardage
BYU wide receiver Austin Collie has rolled up 2,506 career receiving yards, surpassing Mark Bellini and Gordon Hudson on the Cougars’ all-time receiving list last week to move to No. 5. Collie needs only 42 yards to surpass Phil Odle (2,548 yards) and jump to No. 4.
The all-time receiving leader in BYU history is Eric Drage (1990-93), with 3,066. Collie needs only 560 more yards to tie Drage.
Collie has broken the 100-yard receiving barrier for five consecutive games. That streak ties a Mountain West Conference record held by San Diego State’s J.R. Tolver, which was set in 2002.
But coach Bronco Mendenhall says Collie’s numbers could decline the last half of the season.
‘Austin is having a very, very good season. He’s being utilized at a really high level,” Mendenhall said. “Actually, not to take anything away from Austin, but we’re working to distribute the ball more widely than we’re currently doing. I think it will be even harder for him to maintain that pace with others knowing that he’s having a great season. We’re trying to distribute the ball more equally. I think it will be hard for him to maintain it. But to this point, he’s done a really nice job.’
