Monday's morning practice

Under sunny, cloudless skies, BYU held the first of two practice sessions Monday morning.
BYU safety David Tafuna may have suffered a mild concussion during Saturday’s scrimmage, probably helmet-to-helmet contact, and was held out of practice. After Tafuna passes the protocol associated with that kind of injury, he’ll be back, coach Bronco Mendenhall said.
In Tafuna’s place, junior college transfer Andrew Rich saw action. He has played well throughout camp.
Linebacker Matt Bauman, who has been out due to a foot injury sustained in a scooter accident before camp opened, was involved in drills and 7-on-7 situations. He did not participate in the 11-on-11 non-contact scrimmage as a precaution. True freshman Iona Pritchard saw work with the first team along with Matt Ah You, Vic So’oto, Shawn Doman and David Nixon.
Wide receiver Luke Ashworth and running back Harvey Unga both scored touchdowns against the first-team defense. Defensive back G Pittman made a nice play in the end zone, knocking the ball away from freshman wide receiver O’Neill Chambers. The Cougars did a lot of goal-line and “blue zone” work toward the end of practice.
After reviewing film of Saturday’s practice, there are a few positions that concern Mendenhall at this point — fullback, cornerback and the depth at outside linebacker. “I didn’t think the corners in particular played very well,” he said.
Mendenhall was asked about the foot injury suffered by UCLA quarterback Ben Olson, who will not be able to play against BYU when the Bruins come to town on Sept. 16.
“I feel bad for him,” Mendenhall said of Olson. “He’s had his share of adversity and I don’t like to see that for anybody. I’m sorry he won’t have the type of year he was hoping for.”
The Cougars will hold a short practice later today.
