Who impressed Bronco on Day 1?

The answer to who impressed Bronco Mendenhall most on Day One might surprise you. He said it was backup quarterback Brenden Gaskins, who has two completions for 31 yards in his BYU career.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound junior completed 6 of 9 passes for 49 yards during non-contract scrimmage drills Saturday.
‘Brenden Gaskins was impressive today. Not only on the field but in our conditioning tests this morning,” Mendenhall said. “I was probably more impressed with him today than any other player, just based on today’s practice. It isn’t the end of fall camp, nor is it the solidification of position. But I was impressed with him today.’
Coming out of spring ball, Mendenhall said of all the offensive positions, the biggest question mark was at backup quarterback. After Saturday’s practice, Mendenhall says it’s now at fullback, given that Manase Tonga has been suspended for the season.
‘It’s probably shifted to fullback for us, in terms of who plays that spot,” Mendenhall said. “There will be a number of candidates, possibly position changes. Won’t know probably until the end of next week. But that’s going to be a focus of emphasis next week. You’ll see a number of different players and combinations there. We feel we have enough good players to fill the spot. Who it will be at this point, we don’t know.’
As for the kicking game, things could get interesting. Of course, there’s the battle between incumbent placekicker Mitch Payne, who was hampered by an injury last season, and freshman phenom Justin Sorensen. “Justin Sorensen can kick it a mile. That’s not hard to see,” Mendenhall said. “With Justin coming, Mitch Payne’s accuracy has been very impressive. I don’t expect it to be an easy decision.’
Punter C.J. Santiago had a very good first day of camp, booming a couple of high, spiral punts into the air.
‘The ball was jumping off his leg I think with more power than I’ve seen it,” Mendenhall said of Santiago.
