Day 1 practice report
It was a solid first day for the Cougars. As usual, it was hot out there on the practice field. Fortunately, cloud cover gave some relief to those watching practice. It got a little windy and quarterback Max Hall said that the combination of some wind gusts and the new practice football being slippery hindered some of his throws. Hall wasn’t satisfied with his performance, but as coach Bronco Mendenhall noted, Hall expects to throw a touchdown pass on just about every play.
PLAY OF THE DAY: Senior wide receiver Michael Reed made a leaping catch of a Max Hall pass during the first series of an 11-on-11 drill.
QUOTE OF THE DAY I: ‘The expectations are awfully high. And we know it. The main thing we need to understand is, we need to remain humble. We are a very humble team, but at the same time, we’re very confident. We know that we’re a very confident team and we know we can go out and compete with the best. But we can’t act like we can dominate. We need to have a swagger, but we need to be humble at the same time.’ — wide receiver Austin Collie
RISING: There were a number of players who shined Saturday, including backup quarterback Brenden Gaskins, who methodically led the second-team down the field during an 11-on-11 drill. Freshman defensive back Shiloah Te’o lived up to the hype, making plays all over the field.
INJURY UPDATE: Austin Collie is likely to be out 2-3 weeks resting the stress fracture in his right leg but is expected to be ready for the season-opener. Linebacker Matt Bauman will be out a week as he recovers from a scooter accident. He suffered a bone contusion on his foot. Running back Fui Vakapuna limited his participation on Saturday as he is nursing a slight hamstring injury he sustained while running for the pro scouts over the summer. Mendenhall hopes he’ll be ready for Monday’s practice.
EXTRA POINTS: BYU receiver Tyler Kozlowski has switched his uniform number from 22 to 7, a nod to his dad, Glen, who wore that number back in the 1980s for the Cougars … Bryce Mahuika, Luke Ashworth and Reed White alternated in returning punts … John Pace is the deep-snapper.
