John Beck's take on the 2008 Cougars

Former BYU quarterback John Beck, now of the Miami Dolphins, was in Provo Monday to help conduct a youth football camp. After the camp, he fielded a wide-array of questions from reporters.
Beck was asked to rate the 2007 performance of his successor, Max Hall.
‘I only got to see a couple of games, but the job got done,” Beck said. “He found a way to get the ball in the end zone, finding a way to win a game. I got to watch the Utah game and I think the score was something like 9-7 at one point. But it doesn’t really matter. It’s all about winning the game. He’s winning football games. That’s the main thing.’
What about Hall and his teammates’ ability to deal with outside scrutiny?
‘I don’t think they’ve had to handle too much outside scrutiny. We did, a heck of a lot more than they have,” Beck said with a laugh. “I think it’s all been good for them, right? Eleven-and-two the first year a lot of those guys stepped out there. I would have loved to have that my freshman year. Instead, we were getting booed at the Homecoming game. I don’t think they’ve been booed at the Homecoming game yet. I don’t know if they’ve had to face as much, but they’re getting things done. Things are set in motion really well for them right now. As I talk to some of them, they talk about this ‘Quest for Perfection.’ They obviously have super-high expectations and they have a lot of talent there. Shoot, I played with a lot of those guys when they were younger.”
Beck was the quarterback when a number of current players were freshmen, including Austin Collie, Dennis Pitta, Michael Reed, R.J. Willing, Ray Feinga, Bryce Mahuika and Luke Ashworth.
“I’ve seen those guys progress,” Beck said. “They’ve got the talent. If it was my guess, there will be a couple of close games (this season). They’ve just got to win the close ones. I think that will be the whole thing. You know they’re going to go out and whup up on some people because they’re going to be that good. There’s going to be some close ones. Win the close ones and that’s how you get an undefeated season. I look back on my senior year and we lost a game against Arizona and a game against Boston College. One by a last-second field goal and one in double-overtime. If you’re going to have an undefeated season, you can’t have those ‘just-missed’ games. You’ve got to get those.’
What do you think of Beck’s assessment of the upcoming BYU season?
