Football and road trips

Here’s a headline for those of you who aren’t already counting down the days: Two months from today, BYU opens the 2008 season at home against Northern Iowa. The Cougars open fall camp in about one month.

In the spirit of summer, which means vacations to distant locations (well, actually, with gas prices being what they are these days, maybe not) I was thinking about some of the best college football road trips I’ve been on. I’ve been to South Bend, Ind., to watch BYU play Notre Dame a couple of times. Many of you probably visited the Mecca of college football as well. There’s just something special about Game Day at Notre Dame (cue up the “Rudy” theme). Other memorable football road trips include Virginia, Syracuse, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Florida State (for the 2000 Pigskin Classic, played in Jacksonville, Fla., a “neutral” site), Boston College and, of course, Hawaii. I regret missing the trip in 1998 to Alabama, where football truly is king.

Around the MWC, there are some eclectic trips — from Laramie to Albuquerque to San Diego.

What are the best college football road trips you’ve taken and why? Also, are you planning on making any football road trips this year?

I look forward to reading your responses.
