Cougars living on the edge
Two conference games, two close games. Even coach Dave Rose is wondering aloud how long this can continue. Just like the Utah game last Saturday, BYU averted a loss to San Diego State Wednesday night in the waning seconds.
Oh yeah, and the Cougars extended their homecourt winning streak to 41 games.
Despite poor free throw shooting, again, the Cougars hit clutch free throws at the end to seal the victory. This time, it was Sam Burgess, who was 0-for-8 from the floor, who knocked down a pair from the charity stripe with 2.9 seconds left to give BYU a 59-56 lead.
Still, even after that, the Aztecs had a chance to tie. They ran a play like looked like that famous Christian Laettner shot that lifted Duke to a victory over Kentucky in the NCAA regional finals back in ’92. SDSU’s Ryan Amoroso caught the long pass, dribbled out to 3-point territory, spun around and launched a shot that hit the rim at the buzzer.
Can the Cougars, who shot a miserable 34 percent, keep winning like this?
